Online Role Playing Games
Online role playing games are hugely popular and are a multi billion dollar industry. The largest games have millions of paying subscribers and run on servers which cost many millions of dollars to maintain.
Most massively multiplayer online role playing games have economies of some sort. Virtual items and currency can be bought and sold. Often this overflows into the real world, with EBay becoming the central place that virtual goods are bought with real cash. Some games have banned this practice however.
I will briefly mention a few of the most popular online role playing games here.
Everquest 2
Everquest 2 was released in 2004 as a follow up to the hugely popular Everquest. Everquest costs $14.99USD each month to play, making it one of the cheaper online role playing games.
World of Warcraft
The biggest online game of today, World of Warcraft boasts over 8.5 million subscribers. Players must purchase game cards to play. Game cards cost around $15 for 30 days of game play. Discounts are given for three or six month game cards.
World of Warcraft continues to be a raging success and brings in millions of dollars per year for its creators.
Ultima Online
Ultima Online is one of the original online role playing games. Released in 1997 it saw huge success although today does not hold the dominance that WoW does. The game has taken on a whole new direction and the original creator of the game has nothing to do with it anymore. Today there are only around 135000 Ultima Online subscribers.
Star Wars Galaxies and The Lord of the Rings Online
Both of these online role playing games are based on movies. Neither really took off but are still played by dedicated fans.

Many of the games in that list you probably have never heard of. This is because they may only be popular in a certain country or region rather than having the huge international popularity of the above mentioned online role playing games.
